Irish Debt-Insurance Costs Rise, Other Peripherals Unchanged

LONDON–The cost of insuring Irish sovereign debt against default using credit derivatives rose Thursday morning, while the cost for other peripheral euro-zone members was largely unchanged.

Irish voters go to the polls in the Donegal South West by-election Thursday, which could put further pressure on the country’s coalition government.

Ireland’s five-year sovereign CDS were 0.19 percentage point higher at six percentage points, according to Markit data, while Portugal’s were 0.02 percentage point lower at 4.8 percentage points and Spain’s just 0.01 percentage point higher at three percentage points.

Belgian and Italian CDS were both unchanged at 1.49 percentage points and 2.02 percentage points, respectively, while Greek CDS were 0.07 percentage point tighter at 9.65 percentage points.

CDS are derivatives that function like a default-insurance contract for debt. If a borrower defaults, sellers compensate buyers, who may be protecting investments, or making bearish bets against companies or countries.

A 0.01 percentage-point rise or fall in the cost of five-year CDS equates to a $1,000 rise or fall in the annual cost of protecting $10 million of debt for five years.

Cost of Insuring European Sovereign Debt Rises - Markit

LONDON–The cost of insuring debt issued by European sovereigns rose Wednesday, with credit default swap spreads on Spain, Portugal and Belgium hitting fresh records, according to data-provider Markit.

The iTraxx SovX Western Europe index was also at a new record, 0.04 percentage points wider at 1.85 percentage points.

Spain’s five-year sovereign CDS spread was 0.1 percentage point wider at a record 3.12 percentage points, while the Portuguese spread rose 0.21 percentage points to 5.1 percentage points and Belgium was seven percentage points wider at 1.55 percentage points.

Ireland also continued to widen, with its CDS spread 0.16 percentage points out at 5.95 percentage points after a downgrade overnight from Standard and Poor’s Corp. to A from AA-.

Credit default swaps are derivatives that function like a default insurance contract for debt. If a borrower defaults, sellers compensate buyers, who may be protecting investments, or making bearish bets against companies or countries.

A 0.01 percentage-point rise or fall in the cost of five-year CDS equates to a $1,000 rise or fall in the annual cost of protecting $10 million of debt for five years.

“It’s another weak opening,” said one investor. “You don’t tend to get three weaker days in a row, as people will take profits or cover short positions, so the widening should run out of steam some time unless the whole market unravels.”

Moody’s Won’t Change South Korea’s Credit Rating

SEOUL—Credit-ratings firm Moody’s Investors Service is likely to maintain its A1 sovereign rating for South Korea, a senior executive said Wednesday, a day after North Korea shelled its southern neighbor.

“The most recent provocative actions by North Korea underscore what we perceive as the heightened uncertainty from North Korea as it undergoes a transition in leadership,” Moody’s Senior Vice President for Sovereign Risk Unit Tom Byrne said in an email to Dow Jones Newswires. “We consider that the materialization of geopolitical event risk, a low probability but high severity event, is contained by the strategic interests of the U.S. and China and as such, geopolitical risks as currently assessed will not adversely affect South Korea’s rating.”

South Korean markets generally opened weaker Wednesday amid the renewed tensions on the Korean peninsula, but stocks and the won then pared early losses and bond futures gained ground as foreign investors snapped up bargains on belief that geopolitical risks will fade.

Moody’s has a A1 sovereign rating for South Korea with a stable outlook.

“Our assessment remains that the robust state of the ROK-US military alliance and China’s interest in stability on the peninsula will deter Pyongyang from taking even more reckless provocations, possibly leading to war,” Byrne said. “We believe that South Korea’s strong credit fundamentals continue to support the government’s A1 rating and that the outlook remains stable.”
