Alzheimer's has finally Plan

The President has announced the launch of an Alzheimer's Plan. Objectives: To improve screening and care of patients. But also focus on medical research.

In early July, LaNutrition.fr you reported on the proposal by a panel of neurologists to develop a new set of criteria for early detection of Alzheimer's disease. This neurodegenerative disease which, because of an aging population, represents a real public health issue for years to come, is now back on center stage with the announcement yesterday by President Nicolas Sarkozy of a? Alzheimer's plan? on the model? cancer plan? of Jacques Chirac.

Main guidelines for this plan: focus on medical research, earlier detection and improved treatment of patients. On the move yesterday to Dax in the Landes, the Head of State announced his wish that this plan includes? an extremely ambitious research component? and stressed the need? equip our doctors to find the solution? the aim, he said, to discover? validated diagnostic and treatment efficacy indisputable?.
Alzheimer's disease is still poorly understood and mostly incurable. There are molecules (tacrine, rivastigmine and donepezil) that slow the disease progression but does not halt.

Nicolas Sarkozy has asked Jo? L Ménard, professor of medicine and former Director General of Health, to chair the commission to develop measures that will be financed by a system of free medical. The President asked the teacher? gather the best experts? for? propose initial guidelines of the plan for September 21, 2007? date of the World Alzheimer's disease.

The label? great national cause? has been allocated for 2007 to AD group, which comprises 29 organizations, according to a decision of the Prime Minister published Saturday in the Official Journal. This label allows the association to obtain free air and preferential rates for advertising spots.

Tuesday, Guy Le Rocher, spokesman for the Association France Alzheimer, stressed the urgency to support families? can do more?. According to him? save those who are drowning? by immediate solutions is an issue as important as to anticipate and invest in research.

Alzheimer's disease and related forms touch, according to the association, 855 000 people in France. This figure could reach 1.3 million in 2020 and 2.1 million in 2040 ...
