Egypt Nile Cruise Guide - Memphis Tours Egypt

CRUSING ON THE NILE AND LAKE NASSER
A great way to relax and see the sights is to take a cruise along the Nile or a sail around Lake Nasser. From the decks of a felucca, a traditional wooden sailing boat, or a luxury boat you can see many temples along the way. On the shores of Lake Nasser, for example, theres the wonderful sight of the Great Temples of Abu Simbel for Ramses II and the Small Temple of Abu Simbel for Nefertari, which date back to Pharaonic Egypt and the reign of Ramses II. They were moved in an UNESCO project to their present site when the Aswan Dam caused water levels to rise and they were in danger of being submerged under the water. They were, literally, carved out of the mountainside (Allow 2 to 3 hours).Motorboats take visitors on shorter trips too.

Luxors East Bank is the spot where most of the cruise ships leave for their trip to Aswan. The sight of the cruise ships or ornate steamers, many affording top notch luxury facilities, making their way upstream is a familiar sight. They have comfy air-conditioned guest suites, often complete with King-size beds, and gourmet restaurants and bars on board.
From Luxor you will pass by the Valley of the Kings to Esna, on through Edfu and Kom Ombo where you will see the Temple of Sobek and Hareoeris, and on to Aswan.

Cruise ships also start at Aswan and so the journey will be in reverse.

At Aswan you will see Elephantine Island, which once marked the southernmost border with Nubia, and the beautiful Kitcheners Island full of exotic plants. They lie in the centre of the river. Cruising is a wonderful way to see the stretch of the Nile between Luxor and Aswan (Allow from 3 to 4 days). If you wish to continue your cruise experience, take a boat from Aswan to Abu Simbel.
You will see some wondrous sights like the Temple of Wadi El-Subua and the Temple of Amada along the way.
You may also like to stop awhile at the villages of New and Old Gurna (Allow 3 hours).
Once at the Valley of the Kings you could spend hours.

The Valley of the Kings dates back to around the 16th to the 11th centuries BC as a necropolis of the Pharaonic Egypts New Kingdom dynasties. It is approached through a barren landscape of sand dunes and hills until you reach the centre of the valley. Here you will be able to visit several tombs, including that of Ramses I and Ramses III, plus probably the most famous of all the tomb of Tut Ankh Amon (Tutankhamen) discovered in 1922 (Allow 3 hours).

Forex Traders Cling to Safe-Haven Dollar

Rising tensions in the Korean peninsula look to be more than just a passing “flash in the pan,” says Sue Trinh, forex strategist at RBC Capital Markets in Hong Kong.

The dollar-yuan is tracking the dollar index closely. It’s experiencing an indirect lift from the exchange of fire as dealers around the world scurry to the dollar, which is viewed as a safe-haven currency,” one trader says.

Fitch Ratings is maintaining its A+ rating with a stable outlook for South Korea, says sovereign analyst Andrew Colquhoun, declining to comment on the implications of the flare-up in hostilities on the Korean peninsula for the rest of the region.?”We’ll monitor developments closely, as is always the case,” he said.

The news of the shelling jolted financial markets, with Asian currencies selling off against the U.S. dollar and spreads on credit default swaps widening, as investors braced for increased risk in the Asian region, whose economy has powered the global economic recovery.

The Bank of Korea is convening an emergency meeting on the news of artillery fire between South and North Korea.

BNP’s Rob Ryan says: “Any time shells fly through the air it’s not going to be positive risk.” Gareth Berry, director of forex strategy for UBS in Singapore, said watch for another round of selling as Europe’s markets open. “It’s really bad for risk appetite. Broadly, it depends on how things develop from here, but when the Europeans come in they may also take fright on the headlines and add to this move lower.” Mr. Berry noted the?yen move is about Japan’s proximity to developments.

A trader with foreign bank in Singapore says Asian currencies sold on worries of political tension in Asia, says investors going short AUD, SGD, JPY.

Likewise, costs of credit protection on Asian names shot up after the news in a mostly knee-jerk reaction, says Nomura’s William Mak.

Fitch Ratings said it is closely monitoring the developments as well.

Happy Hedge Fund Raid Day!: Six Hedgies to Know.

So the FBI is getting all Eliot Ness today, uncorking raids of hedge funds in Connecticut and Boston. The Journal has the coverage here, saying the sweeps by the Feds are tied to the big insider trading story it broke over the weekend:

The offices of Diamondback Capital Management LLC and Level Global Investors LP were raided. Both hedge funds are run by former managers of Steven Cohen’s SAC Capital Advisors.

The third firm raided is Loch Capital Management LLC, based in Boston, people familiar with the matter say. Leonard Pierce, a lawyer for Loch Capital, declined to immediately comment.

“The FBI is executing court-authorized search warrants in an ongoing investigation,” said Richard Kolko, an FBI spokesman, who declined to comment further.

So, it’s still early in what Bess Levin over at DealBreaker is calling Insider Trading Fest(ivus) 2010. But we figured we’d lay out some of the leading characters at the firms that were paid a call by the boys in blue Monday. (We stress that nobody has been accused of any wrongdoing.)

Timothy and Todd McSweeney: The brothers founded Loch Capital, a Boston-based hedge fund manager that invests primarily in micro and small cap tech stocks, in 2002, according to a description of the fund on FactSet Lionshares. The Journal reports that the men are acquaintances with Steven Fortuna, a hedge-fund manager who pleaded guilty in the Galleon case and agreed to cooperate in that ongoing investigation.

David Ganek: The former SAC Capital trader and art collector founded hedge fund manager Level Global in 2003. “Level Global Investors invests long/short primarily in the stocks of US companies in the technology services, electronic technology and finance sectors. They invest mainly in mid- to large-cap companies and maintain a high turnover rate,” according to FactSet Lionshares. Back in April, Goldman Sachs’ buyout unit bought a minority stake in the fund.

Chad Loweth, Larry Sapanski and Richard Schimel: These former SAC traders started Stamford, Conn., based Diamondback Capital in 2005. Loweth left earlier this year. According to FactSet Lionshares, “the firm invests across all market caps. They tend to invest in the finance, retail and health technology sectors.”?Dow Jones Newswires reporter Joseph Checkler reported a few years back that Diamondback along with other SAC alums seemed especially enamored of biotech and healthcare stocks.

The Journal reached out for comment to all of the funds in question. Leonard Pierce, a lawyer for Loch Capital, declined to immediately comment. Messages left with Richard Schimel, Diamondback’s co-chief investment officer, and Diamondback’s general counsel, Joel Harary, on their office phones weren’t immediately returned.

A spokesman for Level Global said, “We can confirm that agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigations visited our offices this morning as part of what we believe to be a broader investigation of the financial services industry discussed in media reports over the weekend. We are cooperating fully with the authorities and, at the same time, we are fully operational and continue to work diligently for the benefit of our investors.”

Meanwhile, over at The Big Picture, Barry Ritholtz is wasting no time in raising the key question of the moment.

Australia’s QR National Climbs in Debut

By David Rogers

QR National Ltd. was up 2.4% at 2.61 Australian dollars (US$2.59) from the A$2.55 initial public offering price, in a closely watched debut for Australia’s largest IPO in more than a decade.

Nearly 10% of shares on issue, or 220 million, changed hands in the first 15 minutes of trading.

Macquarie Private Wealth Division Director Martin Lakos says his firm values QR at about A$2.75 a share but has a preference for Asciano from a valuation perspective.

“This is day one of the IPO, so I wouldn’t be judging it at this stage,” he says. “At A$2.62, it still doesn’t look too expensive.”

He expects institutional interest to pick up next year with index and long-only funds likely to seek some exposure when the stock enters S&P/ASX 200 next March.

The Queensland government sold a 60% stake in the railroad as part of a larger asset sale program to raise money and improve the state’s credit rating. The government was hoping to sell as much as 75% of the railroad on the public market but it didn’t find sufficient demand for that large of a placement.

International investors took up a large part of the QR National IPO. Nearly two-thirds of the total share sale went to institutions, with domestic institutions representing just about half of the institutional register.

QR National is a major test for the Australian IPO market. It is the first multi-billion dollar IPO to come to the domestic market since Myer Holdings Ltd. late last year. Myer’s disappointing performance post-IPO, followed by a handful of other IPOs that didn’t trade well after listing, left the market for new floats essentially shut for much of this year.

A strong debut for QR could help reignite the market for public offerings here.

Pre-wedding Photography - Do You Need It?

Many brides and grooms nowadays are not only having a wedding photographer capture their wedding day bliss but they are also having a session of pre-wedding photography. This is a great way to ensure the photographer you have chosen will be able to capture all of your cherished moments precisely the way you want him or her to. The couple are able to unwind and learn how to take natural photographs, even if they are posed.

Some brides consider the pre-wedding photography to be a trial run or dress rehearsal for their wedding day. Being able to see exactly what your photographer is capable of doing with his or her camera before the wedding day, just incase you want to change your mind. You have the option of having the pre-wedding photo op done with just the bride in her gown, or the bride and groom together. If you have other thoughts for your pre-wedding photo shoot you can discuss that with your photographer.

If you are interested in having pre-wedding photography done, you should ask your photographer if this is an option.

Some couples prefer to have their session include pictures of the two of them in romantic settings. This is excellent for capturing the love in the soon to be newly weds eyes. If you are unsure of the actual style you would like to use on your wedding day, a pre-wedding shoot is the ideal way for your photographer to be able to open your eyes to the possibilities.

If the bride is wanting the photographer to capture her while she is dressing, putting on her make up and so forth, it is vital that she feels comfortable with the photographer. Taking advantage of the pre-wedding photo op is perfect for just that. This will not only help the bride feel more relaxed with the photographer but it will also allow the couple and the photographer to build a relationship prior to the wedding day.

This alone could very well relieve some unnecessary stress for the bride and groom.

Finally, and probably one of the most important reasons a bride and groom should take full advantage of a pre-wedding photography session is because it gives the two of them a chance to have fun while being productive. Planning a wedding is often overwhelming and stressful for the couple. Taking time away to have fun with each other is a perfect stress reliever.

HK Property Measures Take Toll on Midland

By Robert Li

Midland Holdings shares have fallen as much as 15% today after the Hong Kong government announced?anti-property-speculation measures Friday. The moves, which include additional stamp duties for properties sold within two years of purchase and lower mortgage ratios, are expected to hurt real estate agents as transaction volme falls.

Midland, Hong Kong’s only listed real estate agent, saw its shares down 15.6% in mid-day to 6.63 Hong Kong dollars.

“The new measures could immediately dampen the frenzy sentiment,” 3V Research says, adding that transaction volume could fall as much as 15%-20% in the short term.

Following the drop, Daiwa cut Midland to underperform from outperform, placing its six-month target price at HK$6.40 from HK$7.93. The firm said the Hong Kong’s govermnent’s latest measures indicate that it is determined to remove speculative demand from the market and prevent banks from excessive mortgage lending.

Trading volume was heavy at HK$71.8 million in the first 10 minutes of trade, compared with HK$51.4 million for all of Friday.

Other real estate companies were also being affected by the announcement. SHK Properties, Hong Kong’s largest property developer by market capitalization, was down 8.3% at HK$123, followed by Henderson Land, down 6.6% at HK$53, Sino Land, off 5% at HK$15.50, and Cheung Kong, 2.8% lower at HK$117.20.

“The government finally came out with some ‘real’ measures,” which were harsher than what the market expected, says Credit Suisse, adding that it predicts Hong Kong property prices and transaction volumes will drop 5% and 40%, respectively, in the near term.

Irish Bank Shares Fall After Bailout News

By Margot Patrick

LONDON–Shares in most Irish banks tumbled Monday after Ireland ministers said the banks will need more capital as part of the country’s massive bailout package agreed late Sunday.

Ireland said it has applied for a bailout worth tens of billions of euros from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, sparking a rally in the euro, euro-zone government debt and Asian stocks overnight.

Irish bank shares sank, though, after Ireland Prime Minister Brian Cowen on Sunday said more capital will likely be put into the country’s banks to reassure investors, and that the banks will be made smaller “so that they can gradually be brought to stand on their own two feet once more.”

Shares in 36%-owned Bank of Ireland PLC, which could end up in further state control as part of the bailout, fell 10% in London to trade recently at €0.44, while Irish Life & Permanent, which so far hasn’t received any state aid, was off 13% at €1.

Shares in Allied Irish Banks PLC, which is already planning a rights issue that will take the government’s stake to more than 92%, was flat at €0.45 in London trade, reflecting the reduced scope for additional shareholder dilution compared with its peers.

“The extent of dilution facing shareholders is likely to be significant, and will ultimately be determined by the results of the stress tests combined with the new regulatory thresholds to be reached,” said Ciaran Callaghan, a banks analyst at NCB Stockbrokers.

Shares in Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC, which has about £54.4 billion in direct exposure to Ireland, were up 0.3% at 42 pence, while Lloyds Banking Group PLC, with around £27 billion in Irish loans, were up 0.7% at 67 pence.

Finance Minister Brian Lenihan said the bailout package will include a contingent fund for banks to draw upon to cover bad loans, and to serve as “a powerful demonstration of the firepower behind the banks.”

Further efforts will be made to downsize the banks by selling overseas and nonessential assets, he said.

Already, Allied Irish Banks has raised about €2.5 billion by selling its Polish unit to Spain’s Banco Santander SA, and made a capital gain of around €900 million from the disposal of its 22.4% stake in M&T Bank Corp.
last month. But it put on hold a plan to sell its U.K. unit earlier this month, citing insufficient bids.

The bank said Friday it would raise around €6.6 billion from a larger-than-expected rights issue later this month that will take the state’s stake above 90%.

Anglo Irish Bank Corp., which was fully nationalized last year, and Bank of Ireland are also trying to dispose of assets.

Other state assets after taxpayer bailouts include Irish Nationwide Building Society and the Educational Building Society.

downtown dental disappears

By: Nancy Raskauskas | Posted on | November 1, 2010 | Comments Off

CORVALLIS – Anyone who has walked by the sleek former office downtown dental, located at 142 S.W. Second St., lately might have seen this note:
“R.I.P., downtown dental, 2008-2010. Due to a financial cock-up of biblical proportions, I am forced to close my dental office effective 15 Oct. 10. Sorry. I am not too jazzed about it either. If you were a patient here, I will be contacting you as the dust settles regarding next steps for your care and records transfer.”
Underneath the unsigned note is clip art image of the Monopoly man shrugging.
Calls to owner Dr. Chris Martel’s former offices last Monday yeilded a return message that the voicemail inbox was full and could not accept messages. An e-mail message was not returned.
The sudden closure came as a shock to many.
His office was actually scheduled to host the? monthly Downtown Afterhours event on Oct. 21, a few days after the sudden closure.
Last month, downtown dental earned one of three “Excellence in Downtown Revitalization Awards” picked up by the Downtown Corvallis Association at? the Oregon Main Street Conference, Oct. 6-8, in Albany.
Oregon’s First lady, Mary Oberst presented an award to Martel for his beautiful downtown dental renovation project, as well as the award for “Best Economic Restructuring Story.”

On Deck Next Week: Earnings, Data, Turkey

H-P Results May Shed Light On Corporate Spending
Investors will be looking for more data on business spending when Hewlett-Packard reports fiscal fourth-quarter results Monday. Many also are interested to hear what the company’s new chief executive, Leo Apotheker, has to say.

Competitor Dell Inc. on Thursday posted one of its strongest quarters since founder Michael Dell returned as chief executive in 2007, with a 19% revenue increase and its profit more than doubling. Dell said it benefited from lower component prices and renewed business spending. But networking giant Cisco Systems Inc. last week gave a downbeat forecast, citing sharp drops in orders from cable operators for products such as set-top boxes and from state governments as well as softness in its business in Europe.

Also reporting Monday is Brocade Communications Systems Inc., which makes switches and software used to connect corporate servers and data-storage systems and had predicted a strong finish to its fiscal year.

Retailers, Jewelers, Food Firms To Post Results
J. Crew Group Inc. and Guess? Inc. are among the retailers reporting fiscal third-quarter results next week. Both post results Tuesday. This week, several apparel retailers reported big profit increases from a year earlier, when consumers were keeping tight reins on their spending. Strong results for Saks Inc. and Nordstrom Inc. added to recent evidence of a rebound in the luxury sector. Next week, jewelry retailers Tiffany & Co. reports Wednesday, a day after Zale Corp., which has been struggling, and Kay parent Signet Jewelers Ltd.

Also reporting next week are Campbell Soup Co., which last week cut expectations as soup sales have stayed weak in the U.S. despite its efforts to draw consumers with more promotions. Campbell will post results Tuesday, a day after meat processor Tyson Foods Inc.

October Home Sales, 3Q GDP Data To Be Released
October sales of existing homes likely edged lower from a month earlier while new homes rose, according to economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires. Details on existing-home sales will be released Tuesday, as is the September reading of the Case-Shiller home-price indexes, while new-home sales are due a day later. Also Tuesday, the government will issue its second estimate of third-quarter gross domestic product. Economists expect the figure to be revised to 2.4% growth from the first estimate of 2%.

Being released Wednesday is data on October personal income and spending as well as sales of durable goods, those expected to last three years or more. Minutes from the latest meeting of a key Federal Reserve panel will be out Tuesday, and the final reading for the Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment index for November is due Wednesday. Reports on regional manufacturing activity are expected Monday from the Chicago Fed, Tuesday from the Richmond Fed and Wednesday from the Kansas City Fed.

Financial Oversight Panel Set To Meet Tuesday
The Financial Stability Oversight Council, created by the Dodd-Frank financial overhaul law, is scheduled to meet Tuesday. A group of House Democrats this week urged the council, chaired by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, to conduct a new round of stress tests on mortgage lenders as the industry grapples with irregularities in loan documents. The panel, formed to watch over the $700 billion federal bank bailout, has said in a report the foreclosure document problems “may have concealed much deeper problems in the mortgage market that could potentially threaten financial stability.”

Engineering students plan ‘Pumpkin Chunkin’ event

By: Nancy Raskauskas | Posted on | November 1, 2010 | Comments Off

CORVALLIS — The student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical? Engineers at Oregon State University will again hold a “Pumpkin Chunkin” event on Friday, Nov. 12, near the OSU campus.
The event, in which students build devices designed to throw pumpkins, is free and open to the public. It will be in the lower campus park near 11th Street and Monroe Avenue. Registration begins at 2 p.m., with a $5 team fee for the groups participating, and first throws will start at 2:30 p.m. Themed entries are highly encouraged.
Devices must meet certain specifications, and the competition allows students to display some of the techniques and skills they are learning in their engineering programs. Prizes will be given for design, performance and safety, as teams compete to hit a target 50 yards away. Competitors get five consecutive shots and must supply their own pumpkins.
For more information, visit the OSU ASME web site, at http://groups.engr.oregonstate.edu/asme.

More on ETFs and the Death of Dr. Copper

A recent wobble not withstanding, the charts on Dr. Copper still look pretty strong, with the barometer of economic growth staying above its 50-day moving average. Despite the choppiness this month, Copper is still up about 2.7% in November.

Looking forward the market fundamentals on copper also seem pretty strong, say commodities analysts with Bank of America Merrill Lynch, who note that stockpiles of copper on the London Metals Exchange have been falling and Chinese demand has been sturdy.

And then there’s the physical ETFs, which have been getting launched all over, as Wall Street tries to capitalize on the commodity’s surge. We’ve already mentioned how the physical ETFs might mark the death of Dr. Copper. BofAML analysts write:

On the copper market, where fundamentals are already very strong, we believe that inflows into ETFs could lead to a further tightening of the physical market. In turn, this would in all likelihood lead to sharp increases of spot prices and physical premia … Given the potential sharp increases in prices and premia on the back of the ETFs,?we are somewhat concerned over longer-term fundamentals for metals such as copper. An ETF-induced tightening of fundamentals would almost certainly increase the incentive for substitution, which could lead to a structural deterioration of fundamentals.

Translation: If demand from physical ETFs puffs up the prices of copper, to the point where it changes the behavior of the actual industries that use it — rather than speculators who just want to bet on it — that could mark the death knell for the metal as a barometer of industrial demand.

There has been some good blogofodder written recently?on the similarities between the boom in securitization, which ended so well, and what some have started calling ETF-ization. Over at see Barbarian Capital, they write:

The creation of ETFs brings in new money into the pond without improving the cash flows of the underlying assets. Your risk increases simply because the asset prices are now higher. But the higher prices might result in more interest, new share issuance or whole new ETFs. This might be creating a positive feedback loop.

Hear, hear. We’ve learned what happens when investors get further and further removed from the utilization of an actually asset, like say a house or a ton of copper. This is worrisome.

Construction Ohio - Myths About The Ohio Construction Industry

There always this typical situation of myths and facts regarding jobs and places which are not that well known. Interestingly, it might happen that the real growth in a region is a result of the myths generated around the same! Though the same cannot be said about Ohio, there are myths that have to be quashed to help the state become an attractive investment option.

Ohio is witnessing a huge population migration to other states: Though Ohio is the 34th largest state in the US, it is the 9th most populous state in the country with figures suggesting a little excess over 11.5 million inhabitants. Ohios population is also a reason for the states recent spectacular growth story. Of course there have been migrations and still are, but that is no way a factor that should become national news of sorts! People have migrated to other regions for seeking better locations and opportunity and this has been seen throughout history, throughout the world.

Many civilizations are based on early migrants, who have today become the real citizens of the country!

At with the case of Ohio, migration isnt really a problem that big to discourage the construction industry.

The rate of unemployment in the state is on the rise: This myth is not entirely false but again, it is a trend which has been seen throughout the country. Fortunately, the rate of unemployment in the state is not growing as fast as the figures suggest for other regions. In fact, there have been negative-migration trends in the state leading to more people power! Now, quite understandably, if there is too much of negative migration for finding jobs, it is not possible for all of the migrants to get jobs in the state.

Thus the unemployment rate has caused concerns but not as much.

The government is hostile towards new infrastructure development: This myth is completely unfound and can be called as a rumor that is currently doing the rounds. In fact, the government is keen to provide more jobs for the people originally from the state and also to the migrants. Columbus is the largest and the capital city of Ohio and has clarified that the rumors are completely baseless. In fact, there are specials sops and incentives being given to developers who want to invest in the state and create more jobs. Land prices thus have lowered and the state has again become an attractive destination for investment.

Earthquakes are a major setback to the construction based investments in the state: Though there have been reports of earthquakes hitting the state, it is the geography of the state of Ohio which is an asset nonetheless. It is the huge expanse of water and fertile land in the state that has made it an attractive investment region. The states accessibility is the main reason for its good growth figures. The state has the capacity to cater to 70% of North Americas manufacturing! Today, the state income is on the rise and construction jobs are not difficult to find in the state.

downtown dental disappears
